Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resigned as the member of parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, triggering a by-election he says he will fight to win.
Farage made the announcement in a pre-recorded video statement, saying he had not broken the law or misused public money — but took no questions from journalists.
The move comes as Labour has asked the Electoral Commission to investigate whether financial support Farage received from an associate should have been declared.
Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University London, says many voters may see the resignation as a distraction.
