The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed three thousand, with more than 1,350 deaths — a forty per cent rise in fatalities in just five days.
The outbreak has been complicated by armed conflict in the northeast, where rebel groups fighting over mineral sites have prevented health workers from reaching patients.
The head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that without urgent action, the epidemic could become the worst ever documented.
