BURNHAM WINS MAKERFIELD BY-ELECTION, SETS UP LABOUR LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE AGAINST STARMER

Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election in Greater Manchester, returning to the House of Commons and clearing the way for a direct challenge to British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership.

The seat became available after the sitting Labour member of parliament resigned specifically to allow Burnham to stand — the first time a by-election has been engineered in that way since 1965.

Sir Keir Starmer is the least popular British leader on record, with nearly a hundred Labour lawmakers calling on him to step aside after the party's heavy losses in the local elections.
