India asks phone makers to pre-install state-backed app; activists flag surveillance concerns

The Indian government has mandated that smartphone manufacturers and importers pre-install a state-owned cyber-security application on all new mobile devices.

Officials say it will help crack down on cybercrime but activists say the app Sanchar Sathi (PRON: Sun-Chaar Saa-thee) could be used for mass surveillance.
