India's Supreme Court has struck down a controversial poll scheme that allowed anonymous donations to political parties.

The court ruled that anonymous electoral bonds violate the citizen's right to information and is detrimental to the idea of free and fair polls.

Months ahead of a national election, the ruling is being seen as a major setback for the ruling BJP.

India's opposition parties have welcomed the verdict.
