The US says it's providing advice to Israel about "hostage rescue efforts" after Hamas threatened to execute people seized in Israel over the weekend and forced back to the Gaza Strip.
Several Americans are believed to be among the captives.
A US aircraft carrier has already been ordered to steam towards the Eastern Mediterranean.
