Russia is warning the US not to "play with fire" after it imposed new sanctions against high-level Russian officials on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry said the move was "just a pretext for continuing interference" in its internal affairs -- and has promised retaliation.
The sanctions were imposed in response to the treatment of opposition figure Alexey Navalny, who US intelligence officials say was poisoned by Russia's security service - a claim the Kremlin denies.
Stuart Smith has more from Moscow.
