Over a thousand people were detained overnight in Moscow after opposition figure Alexei Navalny was jailed on Tuesday.
Supporters heeded calls from his campaign team to come onto the streets, despite protests laws forbidding them to do so.
Western countries have expressed concern at Mr Navalny's imprisonment, and the treatment of protestors.
