U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis has kicked off a weeklong trip
to Southeast Asia with the issue of the South China Sea likely to be a
key topic for discussion.
The U.S. has repeatedly criticized China's militarization of several
disputed islands and Mattis will seek to use his visit to Vietnam and
Indonesia to strengthen maritime cooperation.
Mattis says competition between great powers is now a bigger threat
than terrorism and described Russia and China as revisionist powers.
U.S. correspondent William Denselow reports.
