Russia's President signed a law allowing Moscow to keep its air base in Syria for almost half a century. The base has been at the heart of Russia's military campaign since it engaged in the Syrian conflict in 2015. The Kremlin continues to back Damascus despite strong international condemnation and fresh US sanctions punishing Russia for its support of the Syrian regime.
