The United States is offering to mediate in a major rift between the Gulf country of Qatar and its neighbours.
Saudi Arabia and Egypt are leading economic and political sanctions on Qatar, claiming the country has supported terrorist organisations.
The action has put Washington in a difficult position, as Qatar hosts a major US military base.
US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters that Washington was given little notice of the sanctions, but rejected suggestions that the rift would harm regional anti-terrorism efforts.

Ms Nauert, hosting her first State Department briefing after being recruited from Fox News, was careful not to criticise Qatar, but said more could be done to combat terrorism.
