Tusk says the EU will not seek to punish Britain for leaving

European Council President Donald Tusk says the European Union will not seek to punish Britain as he laid out draft guidelines for the complex Brexit negotiations ahead.

Mr Tusk was speaking as the 27 remaining members meet in Malta to agree their approach to the talks.    He said the bloc wanted strong relations with the UK, to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland however he added that Britain would have to meet all its financial commitments to the EU.

The leaders have agreed that if enough progress is made on these so-called divorce issues, the EU can begin trade talks.    Mr Tusk said the EU would not seek to punish the UK for leaving.
