CONSERVATIVES GAIN, LABOUR DEFEATED

The Conservative Party appears to be close to winning a majority in the UK's General Election.

Exit polling forecast them to win 316 seats - short of the 323 needed.

But they are comfortably ahead of the opposition Labour Party which is being wiped out in Scotland.

The Scottish National Party is set to send dozens of MPs to Westminster.

Current coalition partners the Liberal Democrats have lost a series of seats, including Business Secretary Vince Cable's.

Alex Salmond of the SNP says Scotland is sending a clear message.
