Republican hopes high as early gains point to GOP Senate control

The results of the US mid-terms elections are pouring in with the Republican party very much set to make gains. 

The ballot, the most expensive mid-term campaign in US history, is widely predicted to see the GOP wrest control of the US senate, with many pointing the blame at President Obama's low approval rating.

However, the White House insists Americans are voting on the merits of individual candidates, not on their perceptions of the President himself.
