The Obama administration is concerned that Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a new offensive, toward the southeastern Ukrainian border.
With reports of shelling of residential areas and the airport in Donetsk, as well as Russian troop movements, the U.S. ambassador in Kiev Geoffrey Pyatt declared, "Russian-directed counteroffensive may be underway."
Expressing concerns for the Ukrainian people, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the Obama administration is also worried about how the Russian government is lying to its own people.
