Net Migration To The UK Drops Sharply

Net migration figures for the UK have fallen to their lowest annual total since 2021

Provisional data from the Office of National Statistics estimates the total number of people who have moved to the UK minus the total number who have left, has dropped 69% year on year from 649,000 in the year to June 2024 to 204,000 in the 12 months to June 2025.

This decline, an almost 80% drop from a peak high in 2023, is in part caused by fewer non-EU nationals arriving to work or study in the UK, and a gradual increase in levels of emigration.

Ben Brindle from the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford explains some of the causes…

UK GOVT DEFENDS TAX HIKES

UK finance minister Rachel Reeves is defending a tax-hiking Budget - promising it'll eventually put more money in people's pockets.

It included a freeze on income tax thresholds - meaning 1.7 million people will find themselves paying more tax.

The UK's tax burden is set to be at its highest level in history by 2030/31, as the government attempts to balance public finances.

Opposition parties say Rachel Reeves is strangling growth and causing a 'doom loop' for the economy.

She says the decisions are difficult but fair and necessary.
