NATO allies agree to significantly boost defense spending

NATO allies have agreed a major increase to annual defense spending in
a move heralded as a major victory for U.S. President Donald Trump.

The military alliance has pledged to spend five percent of annual GDP
on defense by the year 2035.

NATO's chief has also downplayed concerns about Washington's
commitment to NATO's collective security.

President Trump set to discuss Ukraine war with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at NATO summit

President Trump will discuss the war in Ukraine with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO summit on Wednesday.

NATO Chief downplays Trump article 5 remarks

NATO's Secretary General Mark Rutte has downplayed comments from the
U.S. President appearing to question his commitment to the military
alliance's Article 5.


The clause states that an attack on one is an attack on all of NATO
but Donald Trump said that there are numerous definitions of Article
5.


But addressing the media at the NATO Summit in The Hague Rutte said
that Washington's commitment to the alliance isn't in doubt.

UK To Buy Nuclear-Capable Fighter Jets

The UK has announced it will buy new fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons. 

The British Government says the purchase of 12 F-35A's will see the UK join NATO's airborne nuclear mission and calls it the 'Biggest strengthening of the UK's nuclear posture in a generation'. 


The announcement comes with NATO's summit underway in the Netherlands, and as the alliance's member states commit to increased defence spending. 


The UK's Defence secretary John Healey says the deal aims to strengthen both defence and British industry.

UK PM Pledges Defence Spending Increase to 5% of GDP by 2035

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to increase the UK's defence spending to 5% of its GDP by the year 2035- in line with new targets set to be announced at the NATO summit in the Netherlands.

The 32 member state alliance is expected to agree to the new 5% spending goal- 3.5% of which will be core defence spending with 1.5% being made up of spending on defence related areas. 


The new figure represents a marked increase from NATO's previous defence spending expectation of 2% of GDP - with Starmer having pledged only earlier this year to reach 2.7% in 2027 and 3% by 2034. 


The increases come after US President Donald Trump said in January that the 2% figure was "not enough" and that NATO members should be spending 5%. 


Former Army intelligence officer Colonel Philip Ingram says the increase is recognition of the threats NATO faces.
