Fmr US Pres Carter lying in state in Washington DC

The American public can now pay their respects to former US President Jimmy Carter as he lies in state after passing away late last year, aged 100.


His remains were flown on Tuesday from his home state of Georgia to the United States Capitol, with a horse-drawn caisson hearse carrying his casket down the snowy streets of Washington DC.

US adds Chinese tech giant Tencent to military blacklist

The US has added gaming and social media giant Tencent to a list of businesses it says work with China's military, along with several other Chinese technology companies. 


It serves as a warning to American companies and organisations about the risks of engaging with the entities on the list.

Trump hush money sentencing likely to go ahead Friday

Donald Trump's hush money sentencing looks set to go ahead on Friday after a New York appeals court denied his request to delay it.


Judge Ellen Gesmer held a hearing on Tuesday, at the request of Trump's lawyers who argue he should be protected under presidential immunity.


The president-elect was found guilty on 34 felony counts in May, related to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Trump pressures NATO allies in garrulous presser

US President-elect Donald Trump is demanding NATO allies spend at least 5% of their GDP on defence, up from the current 2% target. 


In a lengthy and rambling press conference on Tuesday, he also refused to rule out using military force to assume control of the Panama Canal and Greenland — claiming the United States "needs them" for "national security purposes" — and he threatened to use "economic force" to annex Canada to make it a 51st state of America

US transfers 11 detainees from Guantanamo to Oman

Powerful earthquake kills nearly 100 in Tibet, rattles Nepal

INTRO A magnitude 6.8 earthquake rocked the northern foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet's holiest cities on Tuesday, Chinese authorities said, killing at least 95 people and shaking buildings in neighbouring Nepal, Bhutan and India.

Chinese state media reported that about 1,000 houses were damaged and 130 people were injured on the Tibetan side. There were no reports of deaths elsewhere. Laura Westbrook reports.
