UK PARTIES CLASH OVER TAX ON ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Both the Conservatives and Labour have ruled out increasing VAT sales tax if they win the general election.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt made the commitment while accusing Labour of planning to put up the tax.

Indian capital swelters as temperatures cross 52C in Delhi

A weather station in India's capital New Delhi recorded an all-time high temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius as the country's north and western regions continue to grapple with severe heatwave conditions.

The Indian Meteorological Department says it is examining the data to confirm the record temperature.

Delhi has reported its first heat related death - that of a 40-year-old factory worker.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activists found guilty

A court in Hong Kong has convicted 14 democracy leaders on subversion charges.

The verdict in the long-running national security trial of a group of pro-democracy figures known as the 'Hong Kong 47' is the largest and most significant verdict following Beijing's national security crackdown.

Chinese giant pandas heading to Washington DC zoo

Now, brace yourself for plenty more 'bamboo-zling' wordplay 'panda-ing' to animal pun lovers the world over. 


That's because giant pandas will soon be returning to a major US zoo, a move that marks the latest chapter in China's history of bear-based diplomacy with the United States, despite tense political relations between the superpowers. 


The two-year-old pair -- branded as "envoys of friendship" by Chinese President Xi Jinping -- will be housed at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington DC by the end of this year.

Pope in first public appearance since apology over homophobic comments
