UNSC fails to pass resolution on Gaza

Russia and China have vetoed a resolution on Gaza in the UN Security
Council that was tabled by the United States.
According to Russia the US' draft resolution did not call for a
ceasefire and that Washington had "deliberately misled the
international community."

Shareholders vote on Truth Social merger

Shareholders of the parent company of Donald Trump's social media platform Truth Social are expected to approve a merger today [FRIDAY] that would make it a public company as soon as next week.


The former president stands to make billions of dollars from the deal, which could help him pay his mounting legal bills.

Carles Puigdemont runs for regional presidency of Catalonia from exile

U.S. pushing Israel to agree to terms of a ceasefire with Hamas, and on post-conflict planning

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is due to meet Israeli leaders on Friday to discuss ongoing efforts for a Gaza ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Earlier in the week he met regional leaders in Saudi Arabia and Egypt to also discuss post-conflict planning.

UNSC TO VOTE ON GAZA CEASEFIRE RESOLUTION

The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote later on a US-drafted resolution urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

It comes as US secretary of state Anthony Blinken continues to insist negotiators can still reach a deal for a truce between Hamas and Israel.

EU leaders have also called for an 'immediate humanitarian pause' which they hope will lead to a 'sustainable ceasefire' in Gaza.

India's poll funding data links companies to political parties for the first time

Weeks ahead of a national election, data revealed by the country's poll commission shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party received millions of dollars from big corporations in the last five years.

The data, which links donors to political parties for the first time, was revealed after the Supreme Court scrapped a controversial anonymous poll funding scheme last month.

It said the scheme was opaque and encouraged corruption.

Indian opposition leader arrested over corruption claims a month before elections

Delhi government has called chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest a political conspiracy by Prime Minister Modi's government aimed to cripple the opposition's campaign ahead of the general elections next month.

Mr Kejriwal, one of India's main opposition leaders, was arrested by India's financial crimes investigative agency over corruption charges in a liquor policy case that allegedly benefited private retailers.

His party has called for a nationwide protest over his arrest.

UN warns more money needed for Haiti humanitarian work

The United Nations' humanitarian coordinator in Haiti has warned that without more money, aid in the country will be at risk.


Addressing the media remotely from Port-au-Prince on Thursday, Ulrika Richardson said it would be a 'catastrophe' if the international body was unable to hand out meals to Haitians.


This comes as foreign nationals continue to be evacuated from the country, as violence rips through the capital.

Haiti violence continues as US evacuates citizens

warning of looming famine for much of the country.

France has called on the UN Security Council to immediately call for a
ceasefire in Gaza.
Speaking to reporters at the United Nations on Thursday, its
ambassador Nicolas de Riviere said that the council was
procrastinating and action needs to be taken.

UN adopts first of its kind global artificial intelligence resolution

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted the first global
resolution on artificial intelligence.
The resolution tabled by the United States aims to encourage the
protection of personal data, monitoring AI for risks, and safeguarding
human rights.
This is a nonbinding resolution but according to Linda Thomas
Greenfield, the US' Ambassador to the UN, this is just the first step
in ensuring AI technology is used and developed responsibly.
