Trump eyes big win in South Carolina primary

Former US President Donald Trump looks set for another big win in
Saturday's South Carolina primary.

It's the first southern state where voters get to pick the Republican
candidate they want to take on Democratic president Joe Biden in
November's presidential election.

This state contest is particularly personal for Trump's rival, the
former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, as she tries to avoid
another crushing defeat.

US spacecraft sending back pictures from moon day

An American spacecraft is "alive and well" a day after it landed on the moon, marking the US' first lunar landing in half a century.


The robot lander, dubbed Odysseus, touched down on the moon's surface on Thursday after overcoming technical issues.

Thousands evacuated after WW2 bomb discovered in Plymouth


Thousands of people have been evacuated in the UK City  of Plymouth after an unexploded World War 2 bomb was discovered. 


The device has been transported out to sea to be safely detonated.

UN General Assembly meets for the two anniversary of the Ukraine war

The United Nations General Assembly has convened a high-level meeting
on the eve of the two year anniversary of the war in Ukraine.
Addressing the forum on Friday, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro
Kuleba said his country has been working tirelessly to mobilize
international support for its peace plan,
while Russia maintains it did not start the conflict as it is purely
protecting the rights of Russian speaking people.

US imposes more sanctions on Russia -- UPDATE (inc Biden SOT)

The United States has announced a raft of new sanctions against Russia, two years after its invasion of Ukraine. 


The more than 500 sanctions are aimed at impeding Moscow's war effort, with some targeting people connected to the imprisonment of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who died last Friday. 


President Joe Biden blames Russia's President Vladimir Putin for Navalny's death, an accusation the Kremlin denies.

Sweden and Hungary’s PM’s meet before NATO Vote

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has held talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of a vote in Hungary's parliament to ratify Sweden's membership of NATO. The two leaders announced the signing of a defense agreement which includes  Hungary's purchase of four fighter jets from Sweden.

Big turnout for early voting in South Carolina U.S. GOP primary with Haley vs. Trump

The first Republican primary in the South of the U.S. for a Presidential nomination is happening on Saturday.
205,000 people have already turned up to vote early for either former President Donald Trump or Nikki Haley the former UN ambassador and governor of South Carolina, from where Caroline Malone reports.

GERMAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO LEGALIZE CANNABIS

The German Parliament has voted to legalise the recreational use of cannabis. 

Under the new laws, people aged 18 and above will be able to grow marijuana in their homes or together in social clubs - but tight restrictions remain on purchasing it - with the government aiming to demonetize the country's black market.

Private Company Lands Craft On The Moon

An American company has become the first private firm to land a spacecraft on the moon, when the Odysseus craft touched down near the lunar south pole.


Houston based Intuitive Machines are the company behind the project, which marks the first time in 50 years that an American craft has landed on the moon.


It's widely believed that a manned lunar mission is likely toward the end of the decade.


Odysseus is carrying a number of experiments for NASA and others, but the landing almost ended in disaster - as the astronomer and science writer Dr David Whitehouse explains.

Ugandan Court Sentences 100 Women to Community Work for Sending Children to Beg

A court in Uganda has sentenced at least a hundred women to one month of community service for sending their children to beg on the streets of the Capital.


The Kampala City Authority Court also ordered that they be sent back to their home district in the North East of the country where they will serve their sentence.

A Russian skier dies in an avalanche in India's Jammu and Kashmir region

One person has died and several more injured in an avalanche that struck the Himalayan ski resort town of Gulmarg (PRONO: GUL (as in full)- MUH-ERG)
The deceased was a Russian national. Officials say all those stranded have been rescued.
This is peak tourism season for the ski resort town, with both amateur and professional skiers arriving there in large numbers.

Protesting Indian farmers observe 'black day'

Farmer unions in India say they're marking Friday as a 'black day' to protest the death of a farmer in this week's protests.

Thousands of protesting farmers have for nearly two weeks been attempting to march towards New Delhi. But they've been held off by security officials 200 kilometers away from the capital with tear gas shells, rubber bullets and water cannons.

Farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for crops sold at state-run agricultural markets.

Philippines denies China's Claim it Chased Away One of its Vessels From Scarborough Shoals


The Philippines has denied a claim by China that it drove away one of its vessels that it says "illegally intruded" waters around the Scarborough Shoal.

A coast guard spokesman for the Philippines described the statement as inaccurate, adding that the vessel continues to patrol the waters.
