UK IMMIGRATION LEGISLATION TO FACE KEY VOTE

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is due to face a key vote later (Weds) after a party rebellion over legislation designed to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda.

On Tuesday dozens of his own MPs rebelled in the House of Commons, backing amendments designed to toughen the bill.

On Wednesday a vote is due on the overall legislation.

If the Prime Minister were defeated it would be a huge blow to his premiership.

Illegal migration minister Michael Tomlinson says that won't happen.

Canadian permits issued to Indian students fall due to bilateral tensions

The Canadian government says there has been a drastic drop in study permits issued to Indian students since a diplomatic row ensued between the two countries last year.

Canada's immigration minister Marc Miller says an ongoing row with India has halved the country's ability to process applications from India.

The Indian government is yet to respond.

China’s population shrinks for the second year in a row

Fresh US strike on Houthis in Yemen

The U.S. has launched a new strike against Houthi rebels in Yemen - the third attack on the Iran-backed group in recent days.

According to the U.S. officials, it destroyed four Houthi ballistic missiles that presented an imminent threat to ships in the region.

WHO: Number of adult tobacco users worldwide has decreased

The World Health Organisation has announced that the total number of
adult tobacco users worldwide has decreased.
In releasing its latest Global tobacco trends report the organisation
says the fastest decreases in tobacco use is happening in the lower
middle-income countries while the highest prevalence of tobacco users
is in the South-East Asian region.
The WHO's Dr Rüdiger Krech has urged countries to continue putting in
place tobacco control policies and to continue the fight against
tobacco industry interference.

Charities warn escalation in Yemen following UK/US strikes could spell disaster for already dire humanitarian situation

A number of international charities have warned that further escalation following the joint UK/US strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen could 'spell disaster' for civilians in an already dire humanitarian situation in the country. 

The statement comes after the UK and US destroyed what the British Prime Minister said were over a dozen Houthi drone and missile launch sites, in response to the Iran-backed groups attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

Trump defamation trial underway in New York

Donald Trump is back in a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday, this time for a defamation case.

A federal jury will determine how much money the former US president must pay writer E. Jean Carroll for comments he made in 2019 denying he sexually assaulted her.

Trump, who won by a landslide in the first Republican presidential contest in Iowa on Monday, denies any wrongdoing, accusing Carroll of lying.

US condemns Iran strikes in Iraq

The United States has condemned Iran for missile strikes in northern Iraq, calling them "reckless and imprecise."

Iran's Revolutionary Guards on Monday struck what they claimed were Israeli "spy headquarters" in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.

UN Rights Office maintains planned execution of an Alabama man may constitute torture

The United Nations office for Human Rights has warned that the first
planned execution of a prisoner by nitrogen gas asphyxiation this
month could violate international law.
Kenneth Smith was convicted for a murder-for-hire committed in 1988.

Voronezh declares a state of emergency after Ukrainian drone attacks

Consecration for controversial Indian temple begins ahead of Modi inauguration

Rituals to consecrate a Hindu temple in India have begun, a week ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the facility.

Mr Modu's party has for decades campaigned to build a temple on the site where a 16th century mosque once stood.
