British finance minister dismisses talk of decline

Britain's finance minister has dismissed talk of decline in the UK in a major speech setting out his economic thinking. Jeremy Hunt says the country needs to take advantage of opportunities from Brexit, which many experts argue has held the economy back. Julia Chapman reports.

WHO to decide if COVID still constitutes public health emergency

World Health Organisation officials are meeting in Geneva to mull whether the COVID-19 pandemic still constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. 


The WHO's emergencies committee is expected to issue a statement with their recommendations to the organisation's Director General after the meeting.

HOLOCAUST DAY MARKED AROUND THE WORLD

International Holocaust Remembrance day is being marked around the world in memory of the victims of the Nazis.

In the UK - a new exhibition about survivors of the Holocaust has opened at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester.

It's filled with their portraits - to celebrate their lives and connections with younger generations who'll ensure their stories live on.

98-year-old Marianne Philipps was born in Germany but now lives in Manchester lost nearly all of her family in the Holocaust.

Harshest winter in 15 years claims 160 lives in Afghanistan

More than 160 Afghans have died this month as the country grapples with the coldest winter in more than a decade and a half.

President Biden to ramp up fundraising for 2024 re-election

US GDP solid at 2.9% in Q4

The US economy showed solid growth in the final part of last year,
with GDP coming in at 2.9 percent for the fourth quarter.

UNESCO adds historic centre of Ukraine's port city Odesa to its World Heritage List

The French foreign minister has made a visit to Ukraine's port city of Odesa, the day after UNESCO added the city's historic centre to its World Heritage List.

Ukraine’s allies set date for meeting on military aid, tank deliveries

Ukraine's allies are set to meet in Brussels to coordinate on military aid next month at NATO headquarters, the alliance has announced. 


At the talks, defense ministers and officials will likely work on the logistics of delivering arms to Ukraine, following a major transatlantic announcement on the supply of modern, western-made main battle tanks.

FDA joins probe into contaminated Asia-made cough syrups

The American Food and Drug Administration has confirmed it's working with the World Health Organisation to probe the deaths of scores of children linked to contaminated cough syrups.
