GERMAN EXPORTS TO RUSSIA COLLAPSE FOLLOWING UKRAINE INVASION

New government data out of Germany shows exports to Russia have collapsed, as the impact of economic sanctions bite. 

Russia was once one of Germany's most important trading partners - but the relationship has now been left in tatters following Moscow's invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

AMBULANCE WORKERS ON STRIKE IN ENGLAND AND WALES

Thousands of ambulance workers will go on strike across England and Wales in action over pay and working conditions. Emergency 'life and limb' cover will still be provided - but responses to other non-life threatening calls will be decided regionally. Military personnel have been called in to help plug staffing gaps - but there have been warnings issued from health bosses that patient safety can not be guaranteed.  The UK government Health Secretary Steve Barclay has accused Unions of making contingency planning difficult.

Taliban bans university education for girls and women

The Taliban says it is closing universities to Afghan girls and women, in another major setback to their rights.

The restriction is expected to kick in with immediate effect.

After seizing power last year, the Taliban had vowed progressive governance but have since ramped up restrictions on women's lives.

China narrows its definition of a Covid-19 death

China is narrowing its classification of whether deaths in the country are recorded as being due to Covid-19. Health officials say that reflects the mild nature of the Omicron variant. But the move is adding to international concerns China’s official Covid data under-represents the severity of the situation on the ground.

Zelensky to visit Washington on Wednesday

Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky is to visit Washington on Wednesday for face-to-face meetings with President Biden at the White House.


He's also expected to make a speech before a joint session of Congress.


It will be the first time he's left Ukraine since the war began, as our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports.

US Congress unveils $1.7 trillion spending bill in bid to avoid government shutdown

Democrat and Republican lawmakers have unveiled a $1.7 trillion deal to fund the US government through most of 2023.


They released the more than 4000 page long document in the early hours of Tuesday morning leaving Congress little time to review its contents before they must vote on it to avoid a government shutdown.

UK bank TSB fined over IT meltdown


British bank TSB has been fined almost 60 million US dollars after its online services spectacularly crashed back in 2018.

Dozens, Mainly Militants, Killed as Nigerian Military Plane Bombs Zamfara Community

Activists claim Rohingya boat in Indian waters, appeal for help

Activists claim a boat carrying 160 Rohingya refugees is now in Indian waters.

Last week the United Nations urged countries around the Andaman Sea to assist the boat but there's been no response from countries in the region yet.

Both the Indian and Sri Lankan navies have said they have no information about the boat's whereabouts.
