UK at a standstill amid second day of rail strike action

Thousands of transport workers have walked out on the second day of the UK's biggest rail strike in 30 years.


Members of the RMT rail workers union are protesting proposed redundancies, pay cuts and safety concerns.

French president says hung parliament creates need "to govern differently"

The French president says the country's political leaders will 'have to learn to govern differently' because the French people "are asking for change".

Emmanuel Macron made the remarks in an address to the nation that he gave to explain how negotiations with political leaders are going, following inconclusive election results on Sunday that left France with a hung parliament.

EU leaders to formally grant Ukraine candidate status

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels are expected to unanimously agree to grant war-torn Ukraine candidate status for the 27-member bloc.

Stocks dip following Fed comments

U.S. stocks fell slightly on Wednesday after the Chair of the Federal
Reserve Jerome Powell said he was strongly committed to tackling
inflation.

But investors fear such action may spark a recession in the U.S.

Fears that death toll from Afghan quake will rise

Further efforts are being made in Afghanistan to identify the scale of the devastation caused by an early morning earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1


The epicenter was in the southeast of the country, but the tremors were felt widely in neighboring Pakistan and India.


At least a thousand people have been killed and more than fifteen hundred injured.

Biden urges Congress to suspend petrol taxes for 90 days

US President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to suspend federal taxes on petrol in the United States for the next 3 months.


The US government collects 18 cents for every gallon of petrol sold in the US, and President Biden says the move is designed to bring about an immediate lowering of the price at the pumps.

Afghan quake kills at least 1,000 with many more feared trapped in rubble

Authorities in Afghanistan say at least one thousand people have been killed and more than fifteen hundred injured after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the southeast of the country shortly after 1am local time.


Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, and the number of people trapped beneath rubble is unknown.


It's the deadliest quake to strike Afghanistan for two decades, and was felt across India and Pakistan as well.

RAIL DISPUTE TALKS DUE IN UK

Unions and rail bosses are holding fresh talks on Wednesday to try and end the biggest strikes on the rail network in the UK in three decades.

Yesterday's walkout by RMT union members caused disruption for thousands, but millions also decided to work from home.

It's a dispute over pay, jobs and working conditions, and further strikes are due on Thursday and Saturday.
