UK could face legal action over Northern Ireland Protocol changes

The European Union could take legal action against the UK after changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol were announced.


Unilateral changes proposed by the British government on Monday go against commitments made in Brexit negotiations over two years ago.

EU to purchase 110,000 monkeypox vaccines

The European Commission is finalising details of a contract to purchase some 110,000 doses of vaccines against monkeypox for EU member states.


The World Health Organisation has previously warned that transmission of the virus, which usually spreads through skin-to-skin contact, could increase in Europe during the summer, given the many festivals and large gatherings taking place.

The UK government has unveiled new legislation that it says would "fix" the Northern Ireland Protocol, but the EU says it's not up for renegotiation.

 

Part of the wider Brexit agreement, the protocol meant Northern Ireland kept certain EU rules in areas such as food standards, to prevent a hard border with the Republic of Ireland.

 

London says it's not working and wants to make changes, but Brussels says the UK can't just walk away from an international agreement.

Jan 6 hearings offer more explosive revelations

UK GDP falls for second consecutive month amid cost of living crisis

The UK economy shrank in April, for the second month running. 


Data from the Office for National Statistics shows GDP fell by 0.3%, adding to the 0.1% drop already recorded in March.
