Zelensky challenges UN to step up, or shut down

President Vololdymyr Zelensky has compared the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine to the humanitarian abuses perpetrated by the terrorist group Islamic State.

In an address to the United Nations Security Council he challenged the world body to reform itself, saying if it cannot guarantee peace in countries like Ukraine it might as well shut down.

He offered to host a conference in Kyiv to determine new architecture for the UN, saying the agreement struck in San Francisco in 1945 has now outlived its usefulness.

He spoke by video-link from Kyiv and through an interpreter.

He claimed the Russians have committed war crimes against civilians in multiple locations across Ukraine, not just Bucha.

And he called for them to face justice at a tribunal similar to the Nuremberg proceedings at the end of World War Two that convicted the Nazis.
