US sanctions on Russia expected in coming hours

The Biden administration is expected to impose sanctions against
Russia in the coming hours, after the Kremlin sent troops into two
separatist regions of Ukraine.

On Monday the US imposed sanctions on those regions but stopped short
of targeting Russia itself.

Dozens killed in explosion at gold mine in Burkina Faso


At least 60 people were killed and dozens more wounded on Monday in an explosion at an informal gold mining site in Burkina Faso. Local officials say the blast happened when a stock of dynamite blew up.

US "strongly condemns" Putin, will implement sanctions

President Biden has issued a strong condemnation of President Putin's decision to recognise the independence of two regions in eastern Ukraine, and order Russian forces to take up positions there.


The US leader spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders after the Russian President's televised address.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will sign a decree formally recognising the independence of two breakaway regions of Eastern Ukraine.


Moscow will treat Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states, no longer part of Ukrainian territory.
