US "strongly condemns" Putin, will implement sanctions

President Biden has issued a strong condemnation of President Putin's decision to recognise the independence of two regions in eastern Ukraine, and order Russian forces to take up positions there.


The US leader spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders after the Russian President's televised address.

President Biden is implementing new sanctions on Americans and Russians who seek to do business in two regions of Ukraine that President Putin claims are now independent states.


But pressure is growing on the White House to go further.


Former Assistant Secretary of State David Kramer served in the George W. Bush administration, told America’s PBS television network that the measures the White House has taken so far don’t go far enough.
