The British government is warning that the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is now spreading rapidly, with hospitalizations expected to rise dramatically in the days and weeks ahead.
Britain's health secretary Sajid Javid said the variant is now responsible for a fifth of Covid-19 cases in the UK and he again urged everyone over the age of 18 to sign up for a booster shot as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed at least one death from the Omicron variant so far, and offered this message today as he toured a vaccination center.

Desparate search and rescue operations are still underway across 6 separate American states following the record-breaking tornadoes that ripped through a 225 mile corridor in the early hours of Saturday morning.
At least 105 people remain unaccounted for, with several towns in Kentucky obliterated from the map by the storm.
They include Dawson's Springs and Mayfield…where dogs are being used in the search for survivors and human remains.
Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky became emotional this morning when disclosing the latest news on fatalities.
