Merkel calls emergency meeting of state leaders

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has summoned her sixteen state premiers for an unexpected meeting to discuss the coronavirus emergency.  

The summit was not scheduled and comes just two days after Germans were told lockdown restrictions would last until at least late April as new Covid-19 continue to climb.

UK government lays out new asylum plans

The British government is proposing making it more difficult for asylum seekers to stay in the UK if they arrive into the country illegally.


It would mean that those seeking protection as refugees will have their asylum claim assessed on whether or not they came through licensed and legitimate means.

Second French minister hospitalised with Covid-19

Millions of South Sudanese people at risk of famine-UN

Millions of people in conflict-hit South Sudan are at risk of famine in the coming months or already facing it, two United Nations agencies warned on Tuesday.

Existing acute food insecurity, heavy constraints on humanitarian access, conflict, economic blows and climate shocks mean "urgent and at-scale targeted humanitarian action is needed to prevent hunger or death" in South Sudan, the World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)  said in a joint report.

Australia – Floods ravage Australia's East Coast

A year after one of Australias most devastating bushfire seasons tore across parts of the country, much of the countries east coast has been inundated by flooding rains.
