EU overrides Brexit deal to control vaccine supply to Northern Ireland

The British government is "carefully considering next steps" after the European Union decided to override the Brexit deal to prevent vaccine exports to Northern Ireland.

Under the deal, signed last year, all products exported from the EU to Northern Ireland should not have to face customs checks.

But the bloc has invoked Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol -- allowing parts of that deal to be unilaterally overruled -- to ensure it's not being used as a back door to funnel Covid vaccines into the rest of the UK.

NOVAVAX JAB TO BE ASSESSED BY REGULATORS

A new covid-19 vaccine made by Novavax will now be assessed by UK regulators after showing 89% efficacy in major trials in Britain.

The UK's ordered 60 million doses of the jab which will be manufactured in northern England.

Trials showed it to be effective against the so-called 'UK variant' which has been spreading quickly in Britain and a number of other countries.

It was less effective against the variant discovered in South Africa.

But Dr Gregory Glenn, president of research and development at Novavax, says the results are encouraging nonetheless.
