RUSSIA TO SUPPLY ALGERIA WITH SPUTNIK V VACCINE

Algeria is the latest country to receive doses of Russia's Sputnik V [vee] Covid-19 vaccine.

Its developers say the jab is 91% effective, and has no major side effects.

But as Russia struggles to roll out the vaccine to its own citizens, some believe the exports are premature.

BREXIT TRADE DEAL TO KICK IN

The UK and EU will begin a new relationship when their trade deal kicks in later (2300GMT).

The legislation behind the deal has been passed by the UK's Parliament.

The agreement has also been signed by London and Brussels, so it can begin as the Brexit transition period ends in hours from now.

It sees the UK leaving the European single market and customs union, but avoids tariffs on goods.

McConnell rules out separate Senate vote on $2000 stimulus cheques


The top Republican in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, says there won't be a separate vote on increasing coronavirus stimulus cheques to $2000.

A bill that would do so has been passed by the House of Representatives but it's not made any progress in the Senate.

Trump raises pressure for $2000 covid-relief payments as Senate stalls

RUSSIA SPEEDING TO FINISH LAYING GAS PIPE IN GERMANY AHEAD OF POSSIBLE SANCTIONS

The pipe-laying project for Nord Stream 2 will soon reach Denmark's waters, as the 12 billion dollar operation nears completion in Germany.

India adds 14 more cases of a mutant strain of COVID 19

India added 14 more cases of the mutant strain of COVID 19, that first surfaced in the United Kingdom, taking the total number of such cases to 20.

OXFORD VACCINE APPROVED FOR USE IN UK

China jails Hong Kong fugitives for illegal border crossing

China has sentenced ten Hong Kongers to jail for illegally crossing the border, after they were arrested while allegedly trying to flee to Taiwan by boat. 

The group has been detained in China for more than four months since being intercepted by the Chinese coastguard. 

The sentencing comes amid international calls for the group to be released immediately.
