WHO reports new record high in Covid-19 infections


Worldwide Covid-19 cases reached a new record high on Friday, as the World Health Organization logged more than 350 thousand new infections.


The bulk of the new cases were in Europe and the Americas.

COVID CASES "RAPIDLY" INCREASE IN ENGLAND

The number of new COVID-19 cases in England has "increased rapidly", according to latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics.


The UK has announced another 13,864 coronavirus cases in the latest daily update.

UK EMPLOYEES TO RECEIVE TWO-THIRDS PAY IF EMPLOYER FORCED TO CLOSED

UK employees will be paid two-thirds of their wages by the government — if their place of employment is forced to shut because of coronavirus restrictions.

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, says the scheme will run for six months from November -- protecting jobs and allowing businesses to reopen swiftly once any local restrictions are lifted.

DRC REBEL ATTACK VILLAGE IN BENI

At least 5 people have been killed and several others taken hostage by suspected rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

UK ECONOMY GROWS, BUT SLOWER THAN EXPECTED

The UK economy grew 2.1% in August according to the latest figures.

That's weaker growth than expected, and a significant slowing compared to June and July.
