It comes as France's Finance Minister calls for stimulus for the European economy over fears the Covid-19 outbreak could cause a recession.

New York confirms 142 cases of coronavirus including head of Port Authority

The Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, says there are now 142 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state:  that's the highest total anywhere in the US.


The head of the New York Port Authority is one of those who tested positive after making several trips to ports and airports to oversee the state's response to the virus.


But Governor Cuomo - who is closing schools in one section of the state - told reporters he believes that sensible precautions like hand-washing will help contain the virus.

Oil prices send global stocks tumbling

U.S. stocks fell nearly seven percent when the markets opened Monday
prompting a temporary halt to trading on Wall Street.

S. Korea reports fall in daily confirmed cases of coronavirus

The South Korean government says it believes the coronavirus outbreak could be coming under control. Though there are nearly 75-hundred cases reported in the South, the number of daily confirmed cases fell from 518 last Thursday to 248 on Sunday.

Moscow proposes prison sentences for disobedient tourists from Corona oubtreak countries

Moscow city authorities have proposed giving 5-year prison sentences to any tourists from countries with major coronavirus outbreaks - who fail to self-isolate for two weeks. It's the latest in a number of extreme measures being talked about in Russia. Dan Ashby has more. 




Number of dead rises in Italy as strict measures come into force for 16 million citizens

In Italy, 366 people are now confirmed to have died from the coronavirus, with more than 6,000 others being treated for the disease.

Several regions in the north of the country are facing new restrictions, with schools, leisure centres and cinemas closed and bars and restaurants forced to close earlier than usual.

Coronavirus Cases grow Across the US

As the spread of coronavirus continues across the US, the capital reported its first case over the weekend.

Facebook Removes Misleading Trump Ads

EU Health ministers meet in Brussels to discuss response to COVID-19 spread

EU Health Ministers have met in Brussels for an emergency meeting to discuss the spread the COVID-19 virus in Europe. 

With the virus now reported in 24 of its 27 member states, the EU has launched a procedure to boost levels of protective medical equipment in the bloc.
