German chancellor Angela Merkel's office has declined to comment on a British report that she told UK prime minister Boris Johnson that a Brexit deal was highly unlikely if Northern Ireland leaves the EU customs union.
The EU and the UK are trying to agree on a Brexit deal before a meeting of EU leaders next week, a scenario that looks increasingly unlikely.
