The United States has begun to withdraw American troops from Syria's border with Turkey, in a major shift in foreign policy.
It paves the way for a Turkish operation against Kurdish fighters, who have until now been a key US ally in Syria but Turkey regards them as terrorists.
The move has been criticised by members of the US congress including President Trump ally, Senator Lindsay Graham, who has threatened to introduce bipartisan sanctions against Turkey if it invades Syria.
