BORIS JOHNSON HOLDS FIRST CABINET

Boris Johnson is into his first full day in office as UK Prime Minister.

His new cabinet has been meeting for the first time, after a raft of senior ministers were culled.

Mr Johnson is promising to deliver Brexit on 31st October and believes he can strike an improved deal with the EU.

But he has a wafer-thin majority in the House of Commons, leading to speculation he's preparing for a general election within months.

Remain-backing Conservative MP Dr Phillip Lee says the question is how he and his colleagues respond to the new administration.

The European Parliament's Brexit Steering Group says the risk of a no-deal Brexit has increased because of the UK leadership contest.

The politicians believe there is still time to find an agreement before the October 31st deadline but the UK must ensure EU citizens rights, that the Irish border remains unchanged and that the divorce payment is paid.

The group says if all three of those things happen then they can re-work the second part of the deal.
