S. Korea, US resume military drills ahead of N. Korea talks

South Korea and the United States have resumed military exercises that had been delayed during talks with North Korea. The move to restart drills comes days after North Korea threatened it would resume development of its nuclear program is the U.S. does not ease sanctions.

Bruce Harrison reports from Seoul.

According to South Korea's Yonhap News, the drill involves about 500 South Korean and U.S. Marines.

The exercise in South Korea had been delayed after U.S. President Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in June.

Officials hoped halting drills would lead to breakthroughs with Pyongyang.

But Washington has since complained Kim has made little progress on his promise to give up nuclear weapons.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet North Korean officials this week. And he hopes to find out more about how and when Kim may end his weapons program.

But North Korea recently said it could resume weapons development if the U.S. refuses to ease international sanctions.
