UN urges Syria ceasefire to take hold

The United Nations says Russia's planned 5-hour pause in fighting in Syria is not long enough to get aid to besieged civilians in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta.

UN officials called on Moscow to extend the time limit.

Tusk calls for May to come up with better plan for Ireland/Northern Ireland border


The President of the European Council says British Prime Minister Theresa May needs to come up with a better idea of handling the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland post Brexit, if she does not like the EU's plans. 


The comments came as the two leaders met in London to discuss the EU's draft withdrawal treaty which was published Wednesday and which suggests Northern Ireland stay in the EU's customs area to prevent a hard border with Ireland.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

TUSK AND MAY HOLD 'POSITIVE' TALKS

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and European Council President Donald Tusk have held Brexit talks in London described by Downing Street as 'positive'.

It comes after Mrs May rejected a Brussels proposal to keep Northern Ireland in an EU customs area, insisting it would split the UK.

PUTIN CLAIMS 'INVINCIBLE' NEW MISSILE

Vladimir Putin claims Russia has developed an 'invincible' new cruise missile.

He says the weapon can reach anywhere in the world and is undetectable.

Hundreds of people have been stranded on roads in Scotland as heavy snow and freezing conditions cause chaos in parts of the UK.

Germany confirms major cyberattack

Germany's government confirmed it had discovered a major security breach of its federal computer networks in December.


Officials said they'd been able to secure the system since then, but it's unclear how much data may have been compromised.

Music streaming site to go public in New York

The world's largest music streaming service Spotify says it plans to
go public on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company is believed to be valued at around $20 billion despite
losing around $1.5 billion last year.

Spotify says it won't be underwritten meaning that there will be no
set price to inform opening trades when they go public.

Trump urges lawmakers to stand up to NRA

U.S. President Donald Trump has called for comprehensive reform on the
issue of gun control.

Trump was endorsed by the National Rifle Association in the lead up to
the 2016 elections but the President's recent comments on guns differ
from the NRA's position.

In a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers, Trump urged those in the room
to stand up to the gun group.

Pulse gunman's wife to go on trial in Orlando

The only person charged in connection with a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Florida goes on trial later [Thursday].

Noor Salman, the widow of gunman Omar Mateen, is charged with obstructing justice and aiding and abetting a terrorist organization in connection with the June 2016 attack.

49 people were killed in the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Parkland high school students return to class

Foreign officials claim they tried to manipulate Kushner

Officials in a number of foreign countries allegedly tried to manipulate President Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner.
