Wildlife regulator considers multi-million dollar rainforest sell-off

The international wildlife regulator CITES is considering whether or not to allow Madagascar to sell seized rainforest trunks worth millions of dollars. The island says it would allow it to fund conservation work, but activists warn it could encourage further logging - and destroy the island's remaining forests. Dan Ashby reports.

Attempted murder charges after German knife attack

A German man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing a local mayor after criticizing the politician's welcoming attitude towards asylum seekers.

The attack comes two years after a similar attack in the city of Cologne.

Pope Francis calls for peace in Myanmar, fails to directly refer to the Rohingya community

Pope Francis has given a major speech in Myanmar in which he called for "respect for each ethnic group" without specifically referring to the country's Muslim Rohingya community. 

Human rights groups had urged the Pope to use the term to show his support for the group, however the Catholic Church in the country advised this might cause further problems. 

Myanmar and it's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been accused of ethnic cleansing amid reports of atrocities and killing of Rohingya communities.   Over 600 thousand Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh. 

During his speech, the Pope called for peace in Myanmar.

European Parliament Urges Safety of Polish MEPs

President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani is urging the Polish government to protect it's representatives in the EU body. 

President Tajani made that plea after a few dozen members of Poland's far-right hanged portraits of lawmakers who condemned what was called a fascist march.

Hawaii to reinstate Cold War nuclear siren system

Over the last few months nuclear tensions between North Korea and the
United States have grown. And now the tropical holiday islands of

Man arrested over terror plot in Melbourne

In Australia, a man has been arrested by counter-terrorism police for allegedly plotting a New Year's Eve attack in Melbourne.
The 20-year-old was arrested in the city's outer west on Monday afternoon by Victoria Police, Australian Federal Police and ASIO officers.

White House repeats Pres. Trump's denials on harassment allegations

The White House is again repeating that U.S. President Donald Trump denies all allegations he sexually harassed or abused any women.

This comes after Senator Al Franken publicly apologized for inappropriately touching women. 

At least 13 women have come forward to say publicly that Donald Trump was inappropriate with them, as well as the release of the Access Hollywood tape where he claims to be free to grope women.

Fresh controversy for Pres. Trump

A fresh controversy erupted at the White House after U.S. President Donald Trump disparaged a U.S. Senator, claiming her nickname is Pocohantas, a Native American name, in front of World War II heros, the Navajo Code Talkers.

Pocohantas was the young woman who, according to legend, helped the first American colonists when they arrived in what is now Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.

Senator Elizabeth Warren says the president's nickname for her is not funny and it's a racial slur.

While Senator Warren says her family lore includes Delaware and Cherokee first peoples, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders dismisses this as ridiculous.

U.S. Senator Al Franken has returned to work in Washington, apologizing again for sexually harrassing and touching women in appropriately.

Six Britons jailed in India win acquittal
