Non-resident Indians can vote through proxy in polls

The Indian government has approved changes to the electoral laws that will now permit non-resident Indians to vote in elections through proxy.

One person will be allowed to act as the proxy for only one overseas voter. 

This decision impacts 10 million Indians living abroad.

U.S. Gov issues North Korea travel ban

The United States is banning travel to North Korea. 

The measure goes into effect on September 1st, after which people wanting to travel to the communist country will require US State Department permission.

White House wants to pressure Iran, North Korea

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says U.S. President Donald Trump signed the sanctions bill against Russia, Iran and North Korea primarily because he wants to pressure Iran and North Korea.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev says the legislation is tantamount to an all out trade war.

President Trump issued signing statements saying he had significant problems with the bill, but Press Secretary Sanders says he does want to send a message.

Absolutely not OK to lie - Sanders

The White House press secretary is rejecting suggestions that she has openly lied from the lectern whild standing on the briefing room podium.

The Trump administration has repeatedly found itself saying one thing is true, then shortly thereafter the opposite is found true.

Trump approval rating hits new low

President Trump's approval rating has sunk to a new low of thirty three per cent, according to the latest poll.

The low number comes after a chaotic week for the White House, in which several senior staff resigned.

German automakers agree to diesel software retrofit

German carmakers agreed to install software in about 5.3 million diesel vehicles which they say will reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions by twenty five to thirty percent.

The agreement came at an emergency summit with government ministers in Berlin, although critics say the plan doesn't go far enough.

Economists note that the White House can do little to alter the course of the American economy, the record stocks and earnings have much more to do with the business cycle.

Trump signs Russia sanctions bill into law "despite reservations"

US President Donald Trump has signed new sanctions against Russia, North Korea and Iran into law.


The law will also prevent him from unilaterally lifting sanctions against Moscow, without securing the approval of Congress.

Voting machine company alleges Venezuelan result was "tampered with"

The company that provided the voting systems for Venezuela's controversial vote for a new constituent assembly has alleged that the turnout numbers have been "tampered with". 

Venezuela's electoral authorities reported that more than eight million people voted at the weekend.  However the company Smartmatic says the real turnout differed by at least one million.  Opposition groups, who had boycotted the vote, had also claimed the turnout figures were inflated.   

Smartmatic provided 24 thousand electronic voting machines.   The CEO Antonio Mugica told a London news conference their systems provided the correct statistics but different results were announced.

Dow hits 22,000 helped by Apple

The Dow Jones index has passed 22,000 points for the first time, helped by a rally from Apple.

The tech giant's strong quarterly earnings propelled the company's stock about 6% higher in early Wednesday trading.

India's Central Bank cuts lending rate by 25 basis points

The Reserve Bank of India has cut its repurchase rate to 6% from 6.25%- the lowest this rate has been since 2010.

The cut in lending rate will ensure that other banks in India follow suit and pass on the benefit to consumers. 

This comes as inflation has been well below the Central Bank's targets.

117 migrant children in police detention in Greece says HRW

One hundred and seventeen unaccompanied migrant children are being held in unsuitable police cells in Greece according the right group Human Rights Watch.

The group says the number has risen dramatically from only 2 children being in detantion in November 2016.

Prince Philip retires at 96

Britain's 96 year old Prince Philip, who has been at the side of Queen Elizabeth the second for decades, officially retires today. 

The Prince, also has the title of Duke of Edinburgh,  will attend a parade of Royal Marines at Buckingham Palace, bringing to an end his role in public life which has seen him make over 22 thousand solo public engagements, over six hundred solo overseas visits and five and a half thousand speeches.  

During those many appearances and speeches, the Prince has gained a reputation for controversial remarks considered undiplomatic at best.   

Royal Historian Dr. Anna Whitelock says Prince Philip has been one of the busiest members of the Royal Family.
