Syria attack wins initial praise from US Congress

American lawmakers are praising the U.S. military attack on Syria targeting the air base from which the chemical weapons attack was probably launched. 

The Syrian military says at least 7 were killed at the air base, but the Russian military claims the majority of the Tomahawk cruise missiles missed their targets.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denounced the attack as irresponsible and reckless, while the office of Russian President Vladimir Putin says its an act of "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of international law."

Speaking to reporters in the basement of a U.S. Senate office building, U.S. Senator John McCain hopes it sends a clear message:

UN Security Council to meet on Syria

The United Nations Security Council is set to meet following the American airstrikes on a base in Syria, partly at the request of Permanent Five member Russia (at 1130am Eastern / 1530 GMT).

Moscow has suspended cooperation with Washington on making sure the two militaries do not interact in Syria, following the firing of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Vehicle drives into pedestrians in central Stockholm

A number of fatalities and injuries have been reported after a vehicle was driven into shoppers in Stockholm.


The incident took place in the centre of the city in one of Stockholm's major pedestrian areas. There have also been reports of shots being fired in a separate area of the city.

US unemployment rate dips to 4.5%

US job growth slowed considerably last month with employers adding
just 98,000 people to the workforce in March.

That's fewer than analysts on Wall Street expected but the
unemployment has dropped to a near 10-year low signaling that the US
labor market is continuing to strengthen.

Arrest made in Sweden truck attack

Sweden's Prime Minister Stegan Lofven has confirmed arrests have been made in the lorry attack which has killed at least three in central Stockholm.

Swedish police have launched a major investigation, cordoning off the area which is popular with shoppers.

Syria strikes overshadow Xi summit

US President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation to visit China.

The announcement came during the two day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping taking place at the US leader's Florida resort.

The talks are continuing despite being overshadowed by the airstrikes in Syria which took place at Xi and Trump ate dinner at Mar a Lago.

Trump launches missile strike on Syria, "in vital national interests" of USA

US President Donald Trump has launched air strikes on Syria, claiming they are in the "vital national security interests" of the United States.


The President's surprise move came just 48 hours after Syrian government forces launched a chemical weapons attack against civilians in the north of the country.

US fires cruise missiles at Syrian airbase

The US military launched more than 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles at an airbase in northern Syria - with the Pentagon saying the targets were infrastructure and the very planes which dropped chemical bombs.

The attack earlier in the week killed 86 and the Turkish medical authorities have confirmed evidence sarin gas was used.
