Syria attack wins initial praise from US Congress

American lawmakers are praising the U.S. military attack on Syria targeting the air base from which the chemical weapons attack was probably launched.

The Syrian military says at least 7 were killed at the air base, but the Russian military claims the majority of the Tomahawk cruise missiles missed their targets.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denounced the attack as irresponsible and reckless, while the office of Russian President Vladimir Putin says its an act of "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of international law."

Speaking to reporters in the basement of a U.S. Senate office building, U.S. Senator John McCain hopes it sends a clear message:

IN: "I hope...
OUT: ...to pay."

Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell hopes the attack sends a simple, clear message to President Assad.

IN: "I think...
OUT: ...still there."
DUR: 35
