US abstains from UN vote on Israeli settlements
The United States did not vote for or against the resolution before the United Nations Security Council on condemning Israeli settlements policy.
While Republicans condemn the decision as shameful, the Obama adminstration notes that Israel's founding was for historic reasons and this ally has always been treated differently.

US imposes more sanctions against Syria
The Obama administration has imposed additional sanctions against 18 individuals and 5 entities in hopes of undermining the financial support for the civil war in Syria.

More than half the passengers on board a hijacked Libyan plane have been freed at Malta's international airport.
The plane was hijacked in Libyan airspace by as many as two men who threatened to blow the Airbus A430 up.
The pilot diverted to Malta where the jet is now surrounded by the island's troops.
