US abstains from UN vote on Israeli settlements

The United States did not vote for or against the resolution before the United Nations Security Council on condemning Israeli settlements policy.

While Republicans condemn the decision as shameful, the Obama adminstration notes that Israel's founding was for historic reasons and this ally has always been treated differently.

Investigation underway in Malta following Libyan plane hijacking

Maltese officials are questioning the suspects and everyone on board the Afriqiyah Airways plane as law enforcement searches the Airbus jet following an attempted hijacking.

The plane was diverted to Malta after two men tried to take control of the plane.

UN rejects South Sudan arms embargo proposal

The United Nations has failed to approve a resolution that would have
imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan.

The US proposal did not find enough support among the 15-member UN
Security Council.

US imposes more sanctions against Syria

The Obama administration has imposed additional sanctions against 18 individuals and 5 entities in hopes of undermining the financial support for the civil war in Syria.

The sanctions include Russian officials as well as Syrian.

Earlier, two men from greater London were convicted of using aid convoys to help funnel cash to extremists in Syria.

Merkel wants changes to laws after attacks

Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel responded to the death of the suspect in the Berlin truck attack by saying her country would look at changes to certain laws.

The 24 year-old Tunisian man Anis Amir was killed by Italian police a few days after the attack.

Almost all passengers and crew released from plane in Malta

Most of the passengers and crew have been allowed to leave the Libyan plane hijacked in Malta.
Around ten people are thought to be remain on board, including two hijackers.

68 passengers released from hijacked Libyan plane in Malta

More than half the passengers on board a hijacked Libyan plane have been freed at Malta's international airport.


The plane was hijacked in Libyan airspace by as many as two men who threatened to blow the Airbus A430 up.  


The pilot diverted to Malta where the jet is now surrounded by the island's troops.


Jurgen Balzan is a journalist at the newspaper "Malta Today".

Italy confirms death of Berlin terror suspect

Italy's interior ministry confirmed that the prime suspect in an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin, Germany has been shot dead in Milan.

Twelve people were killed when Anis Amri is believed to have driven a truck into the crowded market.  He had been the target of a Europe-wide manhunt.

DEUTSCHE BANK AGREES MULTI-BILLION SETTLEMENT

Deutsche Bank has agreed to pay $7.2 billion to US authorities.

It's over an investigation into the sale of mortgage-backed securities, an issue which played a key role in the 2008 global financial crisis.

The agreement reached by the German bank is far lower than US authorities had initially asked for.

Swiss bank Credit Suisse has also agreed a $5.28 billion deal with the US.

UK PRISON WING BACK UNDER CONTROL AFTER RIOT

A UK prison wing which was taken over by inmates has now been reclaimed, according to the Prison Service.

Specialist teams had to be sent into HMP Swaleside in Kent after the riot started on Thursday.

It's the fourth prison disturbance in the UK in the last two months.
