Boris smooths over "proxy war" comments during Saudi visit

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has won support from his Saudi Arabian counterpart following a visit to the country just days after video appeared of Mr Johnson accusing the Saudis of "playing proxy wars" in the Middle East.

Following talks, Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister Adel Jubeir said Mr Johnson's comments had been misconstrued and that Saudi Arabia enjoyed a strong relationship with the UK.

Britain's Conservative party have played down a rift between Boris Johnson and Prime Minister Theresa May, after Downing Street rebuked his remarks which criticized Saudi Arabia and Iran for abusing religion to further their own political objectives in the Middle East .

At a joint press conference in Riyadh, Mr Johnson said he remained concerned about the suffering of the people of Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is fighting Houthi rebels and appreciated his ability to speak with candour to Saudi leaders.
