Russia launches multiple air attacks on militant targets in Syria

LEAD:

Russia's Defence Ministry says that it has launched attacks on militant targets in Syria using warplanes operating from both Russian and Syrian air bases.  It also used warplanes from Russia's aircraft carrier 'Admiral Kuznetsov.' Russia denies targeting Aleppo province. Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

Another tourist death off Australia's Great Barrier Reef

A English tourist has died while diving on Agincourt Reef off Port Douglas in Australia's tropical north Queensland.
The death follows the deaths of two French tourists earlier in the week nearby at Cairns.

Abe Meets Trump as President-Elect Considers Top Team

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he was confident of building trust with Donald Trump, after meeting the US President-elect at Trump Tower in New York on Thursday.

UN asks Nigeria to explain reports of forceful evictions from Lagos

The United Nations is asking Nigeria's government to explain reports that it had forcefully evicted 30-thousand people in Lagos state.


Four people reportedly died in the latest operation by the government to clear the city of make-shift homes, despite a court order against it.

US homelessness rate drops slightly, but up in some big cities

World's largest dementia study finds lifetime loss of sense of direction

The world's largest dementia research experiment has concluded that a person's sense of direction declines consistently through a lifetime, starting around the age of 20.
