Around 240 migrants have died off the Libyan coastline after two boats capsized which could be one of the most deadly incidents in the Mediterranean this year.

The news came from survivors who arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

UK High Court: Parliament Alone Can Trigger Brexit

A legal challenge to whether the British Government can begin the process of leaving the European Union without consulting Parliament has been upheld by the UK's High Court.

It found that a parliamentary vote would be needed before Brussels could be notified of Britain's intentions to leave the EU.

UK COURT: PARLIAMENT MUST VOTE ON BREXIT ARTICLE 50

The UK's Parliament must vote on whether the UK can trigger Article 50 which begins the process of leaving the European Union.

That's according to a ruling handed down by the High Court in London.

However, the government will appeal.

Prime Minister Theresa May says she will activate Article 50 by the end of March 2017, at which point formal negotiations on Brexit can begin.

UK correspondent Olly Barratt says this ruling has provided her with an unwanted obstacle.

Belgian immigration minister fined by court for refusing asylum request

Belgium's immigration minister has been threatened with a visit from the bailiffs - for non payment of a fine for refusing to grant asylum to a Syrian family.

Amnesty International says asylum seekers have been tortured in Italian reception centres

A number of asylum seekers who refused to be fingerprinted by Italian authorities have been tortured by police according to a new report by Amnesty International.

Police in the German capital of Berlin arrested a 27 year old Syrian man on suspicion of membership in a foreign terrorist organization.

The country has been high alert since uncovering a possible plot to attack one of Berlin's airports last month.
