Kabul attack: Gunmen target American University

At least one person is dead and dozens injured after militants attacked the American University in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Police described the attack as "complex", and interior ministry officials said several gunmen, possibly with suicide vests, were involved.

Reports say a large explosion was heard and students barricaded themselves in the building after hearing gunfire.

US State Department spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau said the United States was monitoring the situation closely.

Afghan officials say one are dead and twelve injured.

US offers help after Italy earthquake

At least 120 are dead in Italy, following an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, near Perugia.

The historic town of Amatrice is essentially destroyed, but an Italian firefighter chief reported, an 8-year-old girl was pulled alive from the rubble, as the search and rescue operations continue.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest confirmed U.S. President Barack Obama has offered help.

China denies stopping UN activities

China has denied stopping the United Nations from carrying out human rights work in the country.

It follows accusations from a UN representative who says the government prevented him from interviewing alleged victims.

US joins Turkish forces in push against IS in Syria

Turkish and American military forces launched a major offensive across the Syrian border on Wednesday in an attempt to cut off supply routes for Islamic State militants.

EU agrees to train Libyan coastguard to deal with migration crisis

The European Union has agreed to help train the Libyan coastguard in an attempt to reduce illegal migration from North Africa.

MANY FEARED DEAD IN ITALY EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake in central Italy has left at least 13 people dead and many more trapped.

The magnitude 6.2 quake struck 100 km north-east of the capital Rome.

Officials say it was similar in intensity to the 2009 Aquila earthquake which killed 309 people.

Frenchman kills UK woman and injures two in frenzied attack in North Queensland

A French man allegedly uttered Allahu Akbar during a stabbing attack that left a British woman dead and two men wounded at a Queensland hostel in Australia's north.
The 29-year-old also allegedly repeated the phrase as he was arrested following the knife attack at Shelley's Backpackers in the town of Home Hill around 1200 kilometres (around 750 miles) north of Brisbane on Tuesday.
