New plea for Syria ceasefire

The UN's Special Envoy to Syria has called for an immediate 48-hour ceasefire in the war-torn country to allow aid into affected areas.

Stephan de Mistura asked for what he called a "gesture of humanity from both sides" .  His comments came as footage of a 5 year old boy dug out of a destroyed building following an airstrike in Aleppo became a startling new image of the suffering.

Fighting between government force and rebel troops has intensified in recent weeks, with an upturn in casualties.

Just a few minutes into a press conference to discuss humanitarian aid to cut-off areas in Syria, Mr de Mistura stopped proceedings to make an impassioned plea for a stop to the fighting.
